Electricians move outlets and switches all the time by fishing new wire through walls and ceilings, often with only small access holes. Open walls during a remodel make the job even easier, so it's a smart time to add outlets, USB ports, or extra circuits where you'll actually use them.
Almost always. Most electrical remodeling work, from new circuits and relocated outlets to added lighting and panel changes, requires an L&I permit, and your city may also require a building permit for larger projects. Inspectors check rough-in wiring before the walls are closed up, so coordinating the electrical work with your contractor keeps the project on schedule.
A remodel is one of the best times to do it, since open walls make rewiring faster and less disruptive. It makes the most sense if your home has knob-and-tube wiring, aluminum branch circuits, ungrounded outlets, or an undersized panel, all of which are common in older homes in Tacoma and Puyallup. A quick evaluation of your system shows whether a partial or full rewire fits your plans.
Kitchens need at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits, GFCI protection on countertop outlets, and receptacles spaced so that no spot along the counter is more than 2 feet from a receptacle. Dishwashers, disposals, microwaves, and ranges typically require dedicated circuits. Washington's current code also calls for AFCI protection on most kitchen circuits.
Bring one in during the planning stage, before the demo starts, so they can check panel capacity and map out lighting, outlets, and appliance circuits with your designer or contractor. That early input helps you avoid surprise changes after drywall goes up. It also keeps inspections lined up with the rest of the build.
